The son of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan is under scrutiny for his affiliation with the Harvey Police Department.
A Chicago Sun-Times investigation showed that Mustapha Farrakhan, 52, drives an unmarked HPD squad car and has been registered as an officer with the department since 2006, but hasn't worked a shift in four years.
The investigation shows that Farrakhan's status with the department allows him to carry a concealed weapon and to drive the squad car -- which he's used to stop traffic during his father's motorcades.
Harvey Police Chief Denard Eaves issued a statement to the Sun-Times standing behind Farrakhan and describing him as a "volunteer" officer who helps with community relations.
The Illinois Police Standards and Training Board has opened an investigation into the arrangement, according to the newspaper.
Mustapha Farrakhan leads the Nation of Islam's security detail and is considered a potential successor to his father.
