An elementary school in Glendale Heights was evacuated Thursday morning after receiving a bomb threat, according to police.
Suburban students at Americana Intermediate School were evacuated from the building at 1629 President St. and taken Glendale Lakes Golf Course across the street where classes resumed. They are expected to remain there until their normal dismissal time.
The evacuation came after Glendale Heights Police Department received a report of a bomb threat at approximately 7:40 a.m.
As school was not yet in session at the time of the threat, all students and teachers were removed from the site upon arrival.
In an email to NBC 5, a student’s family member said parents received a recorded message from Queen Bee School District 16 stating the school had been closed and asking parents to not drop off their children if they hadn’t already. In the same message parents were told that the evacuation as due to a potential mechanical issue.
District 16 officials do not believe students will return to the school Thursday, but hope to resume classes as normal Friday.
The Glendale Heights Police Department is working in cooperation with Queen Bee School District 16, Glenside Fire Department, and the DuPage County Bomb Squad to inspect the building and return students and faculty to the school as quickly as possible.
