Teen Shot, Killed in Fight Over Girlfriend

Marquis Harris was killed overnight in what police say was a fight with a friend of his girlfriend.

Police say a 16-year-old boy was fatally shot late Saturday by a friend of his girlfriend after the couple argued at a gathering in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood.

Marquis Harris was in a second-floor apartment in the 6200 block of South St. Lawrence about 11:20 p.m. when he began arguing with his girlfriend, police said.

A male friend of Harris’ girlfriend intervened and the two males began fighting, police said. The male friend left the gathering, returned a short time later and allegedly shot the teen in the chest.

Harris was pronounced dead at a local hospital shortly after midnight, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.

The victim's mother, Patricia Harris, says the shooting occured in the home she shared with her son, and that the shooter was a neighbor.

"He went to school every day like I told him to do, and if he did anything wrong, I would put him on punishment and take his games away from him ... He was 16 years old and he never disrespected no grown person," Harris said of her son.

No arrests have been made in the case.
