A teenage girl was shot and killed while riding in a car on Lake Shore Drive early Saturday morning.

The 15-year-old girl was a passenger in a car with a 22-year-old man at 2400 N Lake Shore Drive in Lincoln Park around 1:30 a.m. when a black Nissan pulled up and fired shots, according to police.

They took themselves to Presence Saint Joseph's Hospital, but the girl was transferred in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where she later died, police said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's identified her as 15-year-old Veronica Lopez. Family members said she lived in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The man is in stable condition, and according to police, is a documented gang member and convicted felon.

No one is in custody, and authorities continue to investigate.

At least 3 other people have died and 13 have been wounded in shootings across the city overnight in a bloody start to Memorial Day weekend.

These incidents occurred as thousands of extra Chicago police officers are on patrol to help prevent shootings over a typically violent holiday weekend.
