Thousands of bikers pedaled down Lake Shore Drive Sunday, taking over the major roadway for nearly five hours as part of the annual Bike the Drive fundraiser.
More than 20,000 cyclists signed up for the event, organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, nearly matching the number of riders who pedaled in last year’s ride.
The event, considered by riders as the one day where bikers reign on Lake Shore Drive, closed nearly 15 miles of the roadway to cars from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m., according to the City of Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management.
Bike the Drive, organized by the Active Transportation Alliance, boasts “five hours of car-free riding” for novice and veteran bikers alike.
Proceeds from the event, sponsored by MB Financial Bank, will fund projects to make biking and transportation safer in the Chicagoland area and provide opportunities for economical transportation.
