A train derailed near the Lake Street stop in the Loop Thursday night causing southbound Red Line trains to reroute, the Chicago Transit Authority said.
Southbound Red Line trains rerouted to the elevated tracks between Fullerton and Cermak due to the derailment about 8:04 p.m., the CTA said in a tweet. The Chicago Fire Department described the derailment as a "very minor incident" involving one train car.
One commuter said on Twitter the subway station was filling with smoke.
"I must have entered the station right after it happened," she told NBC 5 via Twitter. "It was crowded but very quiet with a pretty dense smog and burning break smell. I boarded a northbound train and am hoping everyone who may have been on board is okay."
Northbound trains were not affected, the CTA said.
There were no injuries.
