Champaign Police Investigate ‘Concerning' Social Media Threats Against Walmart

Police said similar threats have been made on social media targeting Walmarts nationwide

Champaign police are investigating “concerning social media posts” threatening a Walmart in the central Illinois town.

Police said similar threats have been made on social media targeting Walmarts nationwide.

“As we do with each public safety concern, we are working to determine if there is any truthfulness to these posts,” the department said in a statement.

Police said there is currently “no information to suggest there is any validity to these claims” and they have not verified a threat in the area. Authorities said the information is “not believed to be credible.”

“We will continue to monitor such reports and are working closely with our local, partner agencies on the matter,” the statement read.

Earlier this month, 22 people were killed at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas.

Anyone with information on the posts or any potential threat is being asked to call the Champaign Police Department at (217) 351-4545.
