Students at Walter Payton College Prep were shocked and surprised Monday to learn of an accusation of “inappropriate behavior” against a faculty member.
In a message to students, faculty and parents, the school said the allegations involved a faculty member’s “inappropriate behavior” with a former student. The employee has been removed from their position pending the outcome of an investigation, the school said.
Courtney Washington, a student at the Near North Side high school, said the accused teacher was once her instructor. She said he was a “laid back guy.”
“It was lot of rumor and speculation especially last week, so we were happy that the principal sent out an email to teachers and faculty about what was going on,” she said.
She said she did not feel there was closure because the email from the school was “vague.”
Emily Bolton, a spokeswoman for Chicago Public Schools, said in an emailed statement that inappropriate staff conduct would not be tolerated.
“The teacher was removed from his position following allegations of misconduct and we will proceed with appropriate disciplinary measures pending the outcome of the matter,” she said.
