Why You Might Hear Loud Explosions in Northwest Suburbs This Week

If you thought you were hearing sounds of explosions in Chicago’s northwest suburbs you’re probably not alone.

Members of the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the FBI and the Chicago Police Department Bomb Squad are reportedly setting off seized explosives Plote on Beverly in western Hoffman Estates.

“There will be loud but controlled explosions taking place,” the village wrote on its Facebook page.

The Chicago Tribune reports the items being disposed of consist of consumer and display fireworks, illegal explosives devices and possibly some old dynamite.

The explosives are set to be disposed of between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday.

According to the Facebook post, the village’s dispatch center has received a number of calls from concerned residents from several suburbs, but notes that it’s not the first time officials have done this.
