Willis Tower Dropped From List of 10 Tallest Buildings In the World

When the Sears Tower, as it was called then, was built in 1974, it was the highest building in the entire world, a title it held for nearly 25 years

Chicago’s Willis Tower is no longer among the top 10 tallest buildings in the world.

Thanks to the addition of the world’s 2nd tallest building, Shanghai Tower, the Willis Tower is now ranked at no. 11, marking the first time it has not been in the top 10 since it was completed, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

When the Sears Tower, as it was called then, was built in 1974, it was the highest building in the entire world, a title it held for nearly 25 years. It has since been supplanted by a building in Dubai that tops out at 2,700 feet.

Willis Tower currently stands at 1,451 feet, and is the 2nd tallest building in North America and the United States, next to the One World Trade Center.

But there’s even more bad news for the building at the center of Chicago pride.

“Given the rapid development of urban centers in these regions [Asia and the Middle East] and the new heights that are being realized by contemporary tall buildings, CTBUH data projects that it will be less than five years before Willis Tower also falls out of the Top 20 Tallest Buildings,” the council said.
