The third wife of notorious Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán says she fears for her husband's life in jail after the drug lord's lawyers reported harsh treatment by prison guards.
Speaking out for the first time in an exclusive interview with Telemundo, Emma Coronel Aispuro, says “El Chapo’s” health is suffering greatly due to the living conditions at the prison. The 26-year-old former beauty queen says Guzman has not been seen by a physician and contends that the Mexican government is ultimately responsible for her husband’s health and well-being.
“I am afraid for his life. We don’t know if he is eating well. We don’t know about his well being because we haven’t seen him,” Aispuro says, claiming that prison guards "want to make him pay for his escape."
Aispuro's controversial interview with Mexican journalist Anabel Hernández comes days after Guzman's lawyers allege guards at Mexico's Altiplano prison won't let him sleep and wake him up every two hours at night — a practice his attorney likened to "torture."
"He said 'what I want is for them to let me sleep. They are making me into a Zombie," Juan Pablo Badillo quoted Guzman as saying. Guzman is currently behind bars at the Altiplano prison — the same jail he escaped from seven months ago — while waiting for the possible extradition solicited by the U.S. government.
According to Hernandez, Aispuro described Guzman's treatment as "slow torture."
"Apparently there's abuse, there's violations of human rights against him," Hernandez says. "They are not allowing him to sleep."
