An Illinois man shot and killed in a robbery Sunday had just gotten paid and was planning on using the money to buy Christmas presents for his young daughters, family members said.
The daughter of Cicero resident Miguel Haro said her dad promised he'd buy her a tablet for Christmas. But now all the fifth-grader wants is "for him to come back."
"He didn't harm anybody," Janny Haro said. "He had a lot of friends who cared about him and he cared about them."
Haro, 44, was doing contract work on the 7200 block of South Hermitage Avenue at about 5:40 p.m. when he and another man were approached by two robbers. The robbers ordered Haro and his co-worker to kneel, police said in a report. The co-worker complied and the robbers took his money and cellphone before striking him with the gun.
But Haro, of the 3200 block of South 54th Avenue in Cicero, was slow to hand over his wallet and was shot. Haro spoke Spanish and may not have understood the robbers' demands, community activist Andrew Holmes said. Family said he was reluctant to hand over his wallet.
Haro was taken to Holy Cross Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m., according to a spokesperson with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

A family member on Monday said Haro had just gotten paid and was going to use his newly-earned money to buy Christmas presents for his 4-year-old and 10-year-old daughters.
Janny Haro recalled the last words she said to her dad before he left that day.
"I love you," she said.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of midday Monday.
