Coco Gauff, the American tennis phenom playing out of South Florida, lost against Romania's Simona Halep on "Manic Monday" at Wimbledon.
Halped was ranked seventh at the start of the tournament. Coco was unranked. The 15-year-old American lost to former No. 1 Halep 6-3, 6-3 in the fourth round.
Coco had already shattered expectations in her Wimbledon run prior to playing Monday against the player once ranked as the best female player in the world.
Halep broke Gauff five times and took advantage of 29 unforced errors. Gauff saved two match points when serving at 5-2 but Halep clinched the win when the teenager sent a forehand wide in the next game.
Gauff was playing in her first Grand Slam tournament after becoming the youngest player to qualify for Wimbledon's main draw in the professional era and knocked out five-time champion Venus Williams in the first round.
Halep reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the fourth time and will next face Zhang Shuai of China.
Play is under way on the busiest day in Grand Slam tennis: Wimbledon's so-called "Manic Monday." Ash Barty's winning streak is over. The top-ranked Australian had won 15 matches in a row but she lost to Alison Riske 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the fourth round at Wimbledon.

The men's Big Three of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic are also all in play as Wimbledon resumes after its traditional day off.
Williams, the seven-time Wimbledon champion, reached the quarterfinals at the All England Club for the 14th time, beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-2 on Monday.
Williams, who missed about a year of play while she had a baby in 2017 but returned to the tennis tour in 2018, before Wimbledon had not played since the third round of the French Open — skipping the grass-court warm-up tournaments.
The top three seeded men — Djokovic, Federer and Nadal — all face opponents who never have been to the second week at Wimbledon.
