Could the presidential election be decided by a crooning contest? Probably not, but that hasn't stopped President Barack Obama or Mitt Romney from showing off their pipes at campaign events recently.
The president sang a few bars of Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" at an Apollo Theater fundraiser last month, and Romney shared several verses of "America the Beautiful" at a recent campaign event.
Late night comics have gotten plenty of mileage out of the musical numbers — among them Jon Stewart on Tuesday night.
And First Lady Michelle Obama turned up on "The Tonight Show" Tuesday to discuss her husband's and his rival's habits of breaking into song.
"That was completely spontaneous," she said of Obama's Apollo Theater performance.
"I didn't even hear about it until it got on YouTube. But he does have a beautiful voice, and he sings to me all the time," she said. "He doesn't hesitate to show off his lungs to his wife. He's good."
Among the other singers Obama croons around the White House: Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder — "the classics," said Michelle.
The First Lady had kind words for Romney's rendition of the patriotic song, too — certainly kinder words than Jon Stewart had.
"Beautiful," Michelle Obama said.
