Black Caucus Decides on Danny K. Davis

A group of African American politicians who have spent the past few months debating who should represent the community during the coming Chicago Mayoral elections has made it's choice.

And it's a surprising one.

Danny K. Davis emerged ahead of state Senator James Meeks and others to win the support of the coalition as their "consensus candidate", despite keeping his intention to run close to the vest.

Davis, 69, has been a congressman from the 7th District. Tuesday he won his eighth term in office after winning 80 percent of the vote.

He's run for mayor before. Davis challenged Richard Daley in 1991 and lost by a 2-1 margin.

This time he thinks his chances are better.

Davis reportedly thinks he can win the vote even if Meeks presses forward with his campaign. He also thinks he can trump former Senator Carol Moseley Braun, who inched one step closer to declaring her candidacy Saturday when she opened a campaign office.
