Mayor Richard Daley on Tuesday named John Rice as the new alderman for the city's 36th Ward.
Rice replaces William Banks, for whom he was a longtime aide. Banks has retired.
"I am confident that John's experience and his love of public service is a commitment to the community, as he's known as a community person," Daley said.
Prior to joining Banks' office, the 41-year-old Rice worked as a city zoning inspector from 1997 to 2005 and for the Cook County Highway Department from 1991 to 1997. City officials said Rice also worked as general manager of Red Top Parking for more than 20 years and owned Red Top Valet Service for 12 years, the Chicago Tribune reported.
"It's a proud day in my life, and I'm very happy to serve the people of the ward," Rice said.
Daley recognized Banks' many years as the chairman of the zoning committee.
In May, Banks displayed a Fraternal Order of Police medallion and an FOP membership sticker on his car even though he is not a police officer, in apparent violation of state law, the newspaper reported.
The Chicago City Council is expected to approve Rice's appointment on Wednesday, the Chicago Tribune reported.
