White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel could make an announcement as early as Friday as to whether he's going to leave his post and make a run for mayor of Chicago, a source confirms with NBC Chicago.
Friday is Oct. 1, and sources close to Emanuel have said that it's "very possible" the Chief of Staff could leave the White House in October, adding that the decision would come "sooner rather than later."
"Because of family considerations, no final decision has been made," a source told NBC Chicago on Monday.
CNN meanwhile says Emanuel is "all but certain" to run for mayor.
CNN's sources tell them that longtime Obama advisor Pete Rouse is poised to step in as interim Chief of Staff should Emanuel resign.
"I think that Rahm will have to make a decision quickly because running for mayor in Chicago is a serious enterprise," President Barack Obama said earlier Monday.
Mayor Richard Daley announced Sept. 7 that he would not seek a seventh term.
