Sox’ Giolito leaves game with hamstring tightness originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito left the Tuesday’s game against the Pirates with left hamstring tightness, according to the team.
A trainer and coaches came out to check on Giolito mid-at-bat, after his fourth pitch to Pirates third baseman Wilmer Difo in the fifth inning. Giolito threw a warmup pitch and then walked off the field with pitching coach Ethan Katz and head athletic trainer James Kruk.
It was the second time Giolito had tested his throwing motion in a mound visit that inning. The first time came after he fielded Ben Gamel’s swinging bunt and fired to first, too late to throw out Gamel. After a warm-up toss, Giolito stayed in the game.
His command, however, regressed. Pirates second baseman Hoy Park scored on a wild pitch, Giolito’s second of the inning. Giolito broke to cover home but stopped half way as the ball rolled toward the backstop and it was clear the run would score easily. Giolito put his hands on his head.
He left the game with one out in the fifth inning and was charged with two runs. He will be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
