Chicago Cubs Reportedly Sign Carlos Gonzalez to Minor League Contract

Gonzalez was designated for assignment by the Indians earlier this season

According to several reports, the Chicago Cubs have made a depth signing for their outfield, bringing on former All-Star Carlos Gonzalez on a minor-league contract.

The news, first reported by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers and confirmed later by MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian, comes as the Cubs are searching for more production from their outfielders, and Gonzalez could be a low-risk option to fit into that role.

Gonzalez, who spent 10 productive seasons with the Colorado Rockies, appeared in 30 games for the Cleveland Indians earlier this season before being designated for assignment. He hit two home runs and drove in seven RBI in 105 at-bats with the club, and posted a .210/.282/.276 slash line.

The Cubs will obviously be hoping that the outfielder can bounce back and re-find the form that made him such a dangerous player in Colorado. Gonzalez made the All-Star team on three separate occasions, and won three Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger Award during his time with Colorado. He last made the All-Star Game in 2016, when he hit 25 home runs and drove in 100 RBI for the Rockies.

According to reports, Gonzalez will report to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs.
