Cubs activate Hendricks, send Madrigal to Iowa originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Chicago Cubs have finally made it official, activating starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks from the injured list.
Hendricks, who has not pitched in a big-league game since July 5, will get the start Thursday night against the New York Mets at Wrigley Field, manager Davis Ross said.
To clear a spot for Hendricks on the team’s roster, infielder Nick Madrigal has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Hendricks, the last remaining member of the Cubs’ 2016 World Series-winning team, was sidelined in the 2022 season after suffering a capsular tear in his right shoulder, and has been slowly working his way back into shape.
After two rough starts at Iowa, Hendricks came back to Chicago for a bullpen session with coaches at Wrigley Field, and he’s been nearly-unstoppable ever since, with 14 strikeouts in 16 innings of work. He’s allowed three earned runs in his last three minor league rehab starts.

He’ll join a Cubs rotation that is seeking consistency from its fourth and fifth slots, with Jameson Taillon and Hayden Wesneski struggling in the early parts of the season
Madrigal has nine RBI’s and two stolen bases in 34 games this season with the Cubs. He has a slash line of .247/.286/.301, and has yielded starts to Christopher Morel and Patrick Wisdom in recent weeks.
