Royals' Original Asking Price for Davis Was Way Higher: Report

The Chicago Cubs had to give up Jorge Soler in order to acquire Wade Davis in a trade with the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, but if a report on Kansas City’s original demands is to be believed, the price could have been substantially higher.

According to Comcast Sportsnet Cubs beat writer Patrick Mooney, the Royals had a much bigger fish that they wanted to catch with Davis. [[405342655, C]]

"Before acquiring Aroldis Chapman, Cubs checked in with Royals and the trade-deadline asking price for Wade Davis was Kyle Schwarber," Mooney tweeted.

That’s right. Instead of Soler, who was likely the fourth or fifth option in the outfield for the Cubs in the coming season, the Royals originally wanted Kyle Schwarber, who has already cemented his status as one of the premier power hitters in all of baseball.

As Cubs fans already know, the team laughed off that proposal and made a deal with the New York Yankees for Aroldis Chapman instead, sending a group of prospects that included slick-fielding shortstop Gleyber Torres.

That trade worked out beautifully for both sides, as the Cubs won the World Series and Torres won MVP honors in the Arizona Fall League, and everyone basically lived happily ever after.
