Wick rejoins Cubs bullpen after nearly year-long absence originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
A day after Cubs manager David Ross said Rowan Wick was close to rejoining the club, the right-handed reliever officially did.
Prior to Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against Milwaukee, the Cubs activated Wick off the 60-day injured list.
Trevor Megill was optioned to Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.
Wick has been on the IL since last September due to a left oblique strain. It lingered throughout the offseason and into spring training, limiting him as the Cubs looked for the source of the injury.
He started the season on the 10-day IL but the Cubs transferred him to the 60-day after he sustained a setback earlier this season.
Wick began a rehab assignment with Single-A South Bend last month and later joined Triple-A Iowa. Combined, he allowed five runs on seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, although all of those runs came in one of his eight outings.
Wick emerged as a key high-leverage, late-inning relief arm for the Cubs in recent seasons. He posted a 2.66 ERA in 60 appearances from 2019-20, striking out 55 in 50 2/3 innings.
The Cubs also recalled lefty Kyle Ryan from Iowa to be their 27th man for the doubleheader — hours after optioning him there.
