McCutchen was hit on his front hip, after the previous pitch from Thompson sailed behind him. He took exception to the pitch that hit him, appearing to direct some words at Thompson.
Both benches and bullpens then emptied.
The McCutchen hit by pitch came a half inning after Cubs outfielder Ian Happ took a pitch off his left kneecap and exited the game.
