Report: Padres 'close to' acquiring Max Scherzer originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

One of the teams that could stand between the White Sox and a World Series reportedly is close to adding an ace.

The San Diego Padres are close to acquiring pitcher Max Scherzer from the Washington Nationals, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal reported Thursday, citing souces.

The Giants, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, were among the favorites to land Scherzer, but it looks like he'll be heading to San Diego instead.

Scherzer, 37, is a three-time Cy Young Award winner and remains one of the best pichers in baseball. In 19 starts with the Nationals this season, he has an 8-4 record with a 2.76 ERA and 0.89 WHIP.
