MLB umpires to begin announcing replay decisions originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
Beginning this season, umpires will inform fans at the ballpark and those watching on TV at home of replay review decisions, Major League Baseball announced Friday.
Umpires will be mic'd up to announce replay decisions, the league said. Training has been held in Arizona and Florida this spring.
The move has been long anticipated. Since MLB implemented the current replay system in 2014, umpires have used 'safe' or 'out' gestures to signal review outcomes. Fans at home and the ballpark alike often have been left seeking an explanation.
MLB follows other major sports leagues in mic'ing up umpires to announce review decisions. NFL and NHL referees have long been mic'd up to inform fans of review outcomes.
