Kreutz: Nagy 'has no idea what’s wrong with his offense' originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago
The Bears offense, outside of a few garbage time touchdowns, largely struggled on Sunday Night Football against the Packers. So, what's the problem?
Earlier this week, head coach Matt Nagy pointed to the Bears struggling to run the football as where a lot of the offensive issues start. But following Sunday night's 41-25 loss to Green Bay, NBC Sports Chicago's Olin Kreutz, questioned that theory.
"What’s frustrating is every time someone asks Coach Nagy what’s wrong with your offense, he says the run game. 'We got to get the run game going,'" Kreutz said Sunday on the Football Aftershow. "My argument is even when you’re running the ball, you’re not scoring points."
The Bears, namely David Montgomery, ran the ball well on Sunday. The second-year back accounted for 103 yards on 11 carries, including a 57-yard run in the first quarter — the longest of his career. However, they only ran the ball 16 times (an early deficit didn't help matters) and lost by double digits.
Kreutz pointed out how earlier this season, the Bears offense struggled to score even when they committed to the run, citing the Lions, Falcons and Giants games. "They scored at the end of the game when they went no huddle, when they threw the ball all over the place," he said.
So if the running game isn't to blame for the Bears' offensive woes, what does that mean?
"When (Nagy) says that right now, because he said that in Oakland last year, when the offense was broken too, when he says that, I know he doesn’t know what’s wrong with his offense," Kreutz said. "He has no idea what’s wrong with his offense because every time he says that, it hasn’t been fixed."
Montgomery's performance Sunday was promising and getting him more carries could be an answer for the offense moving forward.
"Let’s get this guy 20-something carries and let’s just see what happens," Kreutz said.
