Over 102,000 ComEd customers remain without power Monday evening on the heels of a tornado outbreak across the Chicago area, with the National Weather Service reporting 17 confirmed tornadoes in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana on July 14-15.

The National Weather Service is continuing their work in determining how many tornadoes hit the Chicago area on Monday night, and at least one of those twisters hit downtown Chicago.

Tornadoes don’t hit the city of Chicago very often, but weather officials have confirmed that an EF-1 tornado impacted the city’s Near West Side and Loop during Monday night’ severe weather outbreak.

Tuesday morning commuters may run into issues as downed trees and power lines from Monday’s storm cause traffic impacts across the Chicago area, from Shorewood to Grant Park.

Tornadoes in the city of Chicago aren’t common, but the National Weather Service says at least two touchdown paths were observed on the city’s South Side after a powerful thunderstorm ripped through the area Sunday night.

Residents in the Northwest Suburbs are continuing the cleanup process after tornadoes are confirmed to have touched down in the Elgin area, NBC Chicago’s Lexi Sutter reports.
