A round of severe weather sparked watches and warnings across the Chicago area on Monday, but another round of severe storms could occur Tuesday.
In fact, the chance of that weather developing is even higher, with the area at an “enhanced” risk of severe storms, the third of five levels used by the Storm Prediction Center to forecast extreme weather.
All Chicago-area counties are in that category.
The main threat with any storms that develop on Monday will be gusty winds. According to the National Weather Service, the parts of the area that are at an "enhanced" risk of severe weather could see wind gusts in excess of 75 miles per hour, powerful enough to down trees and cause limited structural damage.
Large hail is also possible, along with a risk of brief tornadoes across the area.
In terms of timing, there are some storms possible Tuesday morning, but the main threat emerges in the late afternoon and the early evening, with timing after 7 p.m. currently estimated by NWS.
Areas out to the west of the Chicago area could see even more violent winds and a higher threat of tornadoes, with areas around the Quad Cities potentially at a "moderate" risk of severe weather, officials said.
