*Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly indicated that the watch had been canceled for all of Illinois and Indiana, but has now been corrected with the most up-to-date information.
A tornado watch in effect for most of the Chicago area and parts of northwest Indiana has been canceled in most areas, but several counties will now remain under that watch until midnight.
The watch will remain in effect for Will and Kankakee counties in Illinois, as well as Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana.
The watch had originally included McHenry, Lake, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Cook, LaSalle, Kendall and Grundy counties as well, but was canceled in those communities just ahead of its expiration at 10 p.m.
Prior to the latest updates, a series of tornado warnings were issued in DeKalb, Kane and DuPage counties, with multiple touchdowns reported in numerous communities across the area.
Some storm damage was reported in Burlington, among other communities, but the full scope of the damage is unknown at this time.
Even after severe weather moves out of the area, the Chicago area will see a new threat on Tuesday: oppressive heat indices that could easily exceed 100 degrees and could approach 110 in some locations.
Local
Areas to the south and west of the Chicago metropolitan area will likely see the highest heat indices, prompting a heat advisory from the National Weather Service for all of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
